X (Twitter) Account Suspended or Locked: How to Get Back In
If you can’t use your X (formerly Twitter) account, first work out which state it’s in, because each one has a different fix. Locked means X wants proof that you own the account: verify by phone, email or captcha and you’re back. Limited means some features are off for a set time: wait or verify. Suspended means X blocked the account for its rules or security: follow any verification prompt, and if that’s not enough, file an appeal while logged in to the account.
Everything below comes from X’s own help center, read in September and October 2026 (suspended accounts, locked and limited accounts). Where X doesn’t publish something, such as appeal times, we say so.
Is your X account suspended, locked or limited?
| What you see | State | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| “Account suspended” on your profile | Suspended | Blocked for breaking the X Rules, or held while X secures a possibly hacked account |
| “Your account has been locked” or “Please verify your account” when you log in | Locked | X needs you to confirm you’re the owner |
| “Your account has been locked for security purposes” | Locked (security) | X detected suspicious activity and thinks the account may be compromised |
| A message that your account features are “temporarily limited” | Limited | You can use X, but some features are restricted for a set time |
| Visitors see a warning that the account “has displayed unusual activity” | Locked | Shown on your profile while it’s locked |
Developers may also meet the locked state as API error 326: “To protect our users from spam and other malicious activity, this account is temporarily locked” (X API error codes, 2024 archive).
If none of these messages appear but your posts seem to reach nobody, you may have reduced visibility instead: run our free shadowban test. And if the app refuses to log you in with “Attestation Denied”, that’s an app check, not an account problem: see how to fix Attestation Denied.
Why do X accounts get suspended?
X gives three main reasons (X Help):
- Spam or fake accounts. “Most of the accounts we suspend are suspended because they are spammy, or just plain fake”. X adds that real accounts are sometimes suspended by mistake.
- Account security at risk. If X suspects an account was hacked, it may suspend it until it’s secured and returned to its owner.
- Abusive posts or behavior. Threats, impersonation and other abuse can lead to a temporary or, in some cases, permanent suspension.
X says it may add more details about the reason on the suspended profile. Also check the email address linked to your account.
How do you unlock a locked X account?
Log in, look for the message saying your account is locked, select Start, and follow one of the three checks X offers (X Help):
- By phone: enter your phone number, then the code X sends by text or call, and select Submit. X notes that it will associate this phone number with your account.
- By email: select Send email, then enter the code from X’s email and select Verify. Check your spam, junk and social folders.
- By captcha: used when the account looks automated. The check runs in the background, then you select Continue to X.
If the account was locked for security purposes, X asks you to change your password when you log in.
Can’t log in, or lost the phone or email linked to the account? Contact X’s support team. X warns that “sometimes the only option in this situation is to create a new account.”
What does a limited X account mean?
A limited account still works, with some features restricted. X gives two cases (X Help):
- Possible rule violation. X may limit features for a while, for example so that only your followers can see your activity (posts, likes, reposts). Select Continue to X to start the countdown.
- Suspicious activity, such as aggressive following or engagement (mass likes, reposts, quotes). The limit lasts “for a specified time”. You can either use X in a limited state until then, or verify your phone number or email to restore features. After repeated violations, X may not offer the phone option.
A limited account may be able to post from a browser but not from the app. If posting fails in the app, try x.com.
To stay clear of follow limits, see X’s official limits in our guide to rate limit exceeded on X.
How do you appeal a suspension on X?
- Log in to the suspended account. If X asks you to confirm your phone number or email, do it first: X says this alone can unsuspend some accounts.
- Open a new browser tab while you’re still logged in.
- File an appeal with X’s account access appeal form. Explain briefly why you think the suspension is a mistake, or confirm that the behavior has stopped.
- Watch your email for X’s answer.
What X doesn’t tell you:
- How long a review takes. X publishes no appeal timeline, so any precise delay you read elsewhere is a guess.
- Whether filing several appeals helps. Nothing in X’s help says it does.
Be wary of paid “unsuspend” services: the appeal form is free, and it’s the route X’s help center gives. Never share your password with a third party to get an account back.
Can you deactivate or delete a suspended X account?
Not right away. X says you must file an appeal first. If you still want to deactivate after appealing, you can then submit a deactivation request (X Help). Suspended accounts can also request a copy of their account information.
For accounts in good standing, our step-by-step guide explains how to delete your Twitter (X) account.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between a suspended and a locked X account?
A suspended account is blocked for breaking X’s rules or for security reasons, and its profile shows “Account suspended”. A locked account is paused until you prove you own it, by phone, email or captcha. A limited account still works, but with some features restricted for a set time.
How do I unlock my X account?
Log in, look for the message saying your account has been locked, select Start, and verify by phone, email or captcha. If you can’t log in or no longer have the phone or email, contact X’s support team.
How do I appeal a suspension on X?
Log in to the suspended account, open a new browser tab, and file an appeal through X’s account access appeal form. First follow any prompt asking you to confirm your phone number or email: that alone can lift the suspension.
How long does an X suspension last?
X doesn’t publish a standard duration or a review time for appeals. Feature limits for aggressive following or engagement last “for a specified time” shown in the message; suspensions for abuse can be temporary or permanent.
Why was my X account suspended for no reason?
X says most suspensions are for spam or fake accounts, accounts that may be hacked, or abusive behavior, and that real accounts are sometimes suspended by mistake. X may add the reason to your profile or its email; if you think it’s a mistake, appeal.
Can I delete a suspended X account?
Not directly. X says you first need to file an appeal; if you still want to deactivate after appealing, you can submit a deactivation request.
