X (Twitter) Content Not Available or Playback Error: Fixes

“Content not available” and “Playback error” on X (formerly Twitter) mean one of two things. Either the media failed to load, which you can usually fix in a minute (reload, switch networks, update or clear the app), or X won’t show you the post: it was deleted, the account is protected, blocked you or was suspended, or the content is withheld in your country or removed for copyright. The exact wording, and whether it happens on every video or just one, tells you which.

Which message are you seeing?

Message What it usually means Go to
“Playback error” with a Reload button The video failed to load Fix playback errors
“Content not available” or “Content is not available” on a video or GIF Loading failure, or media you aren’t allowed to see Start with the playback fixes, then why X hides posts
“This post is unavailable” X won’t show you this post Why X hides posts
A notice that the post or account is withheld in your country Restricted by local law or a legal demand Withheld content
A notice that the media was disabled after a report by the copyright owner DMCA takedown Copyright
A sensitive or age-restricted content warning Adult or graphic media behind a notice Sensitive media

Quick test: if every video fails, the problem is on your side or X’s side. If only one post fails, the problem is that post.

How do you fix “Playback error” on X?

Videos and GIFs that won’t play are the most common case. In 2023, PiunikaWeb collected reports of “Content not available” and “Playback error” on videos and GIFs, with no acknowledgment from X at the time (PiunikaWeb). Try these steps in order:

  1. Tap Reload, or refresh the page.
  2. Check whether X is down. Open another video, and X on another device. If nothing plays anywhere, wait: no local fix helps during an outage.
  3. Switch networks. Move from Wi-Fi to mobile data (or the reverse), and turn off your VPN or proxy.
  4. Update the X app from the App Store or Google Play.
  5. Clear the app’s cache. On Android: Settings → Apps → X → Storage → Clear cache. On iPhone, delete and reinstall the app.
  6. Restart your phone or computer.

On a computer, also:

  • open X in a private window, which runs without your extensions and saved data;
  • disable ad blockers and privacy extensions on x.com;
  • update your browser. Some people with less common browsers report a “browser does not support video playback” message on X (Opera forums), so try Chrome, Safari, Firefox or Edge to compare.

If videos only play once you tap them, that’s not an error: X lets you turn video autoplay on or off, in Settings and privacy → Accessibility, display, and languages → Data usage → Video autoplay in the app (X Help).

What does “This post is unavailable” mean?

When X won’t show you a post, it replaces it with a notice. X lists the cases where a post is “unavailable to view” (X Help: Notices on X):

  • the post comes from a protected account you don’t follow;
  • the account has blocked you;
  • the post was deleted;
  • the post comes from a deactivated account.

X also hides posts behind a notice in these cases:

  • The account is suspended. “Any posts from that account will be hidden behind a notice.”
  • The post broke X’s rules and hasn’t been deleted yet. The account stays locked until the post is removed.
  • You muted or blocked the author, and someone else shared the post. Here you can click through the notice to see it.
  • You reported the post. X hides it and lets you choose whether to view it again.

None of these are bugs, and clearing your cache won’t change them. If you think your own posts are hidden from others without any notice, run our free shadowban test. If your account shows a suspension, see account suspended or locked on X.

Why is a post withheld in your country?

X can withhold a post or a whole account in one country while it stays visible elsewhere. According to X, this happens when it receives “a valid legal demand, such as a court order”, or a report under local law (X Help: Country withheld content). X says it uses “information that we may receive about your location to determine your country”, and that it notifies the affected users unless it’s prohibited from doing so.

If the withheld post is yours, check the email address on your account for X’s notice.

X responds to copyright complaints under the US Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), including complaints about videos and images uploaded to X (X Help: Copyright policy). When a complaint is accepted, the media is replaced with a notice saying it was disabled in response to a report by the copyright owner.

If it’s your post, X’s email describes the complaint and explains how to file a counter-notice. Only do it if you own the rights or believe the use is lawful: X warns that filing a complaint or counter-notice is “serious business”.

If you just want to find a clip that was taken down, other copies may still exist on X or elsewhere: our Twitter video finder guide shows how to search for them, and our reverse video search guide helps when you only have a screenshot.

Why can’t you see sensitive or age-restricted media?

X puts some media, such as adult content or graphic violence, behind a warning. It also restricts viewers under 18, or who haven’t added a birth date to their profile, from viewing adult content (X Help: Notices on X). X notes that you can’t click through these warnings in the iOS app. Adults can change whether they see sensitive media in their settings.

Why won’t your own video play after you upload it?

If a video you posted fails for everyone, check the file first. X prompts you when a video isn’t in a supported format, and limits uploads to 140 seconds and 512 MB without a subscription. Premium subscribers can upload longer videos, up to 16 GB (X Help). Re-export the video in a standard format (MP4 is the safe choice) and upload it again.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Twitter say "Content not available"?

Either the media failed to load (a network problem, an outage, an old app or a bad cache), or X won’t show it to you: the post was deleted, the account is protected, suspended or deactivated, it blocked you, or the content is withheld in your country or removed for copyright.

How do I fix "Playback error" on X?

Tap Reload or refresh the page, switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, update the X app, and clear its cache (or reinstall it on iPhone). On a computer, try a private window to rule out extensions. If videos fail everywhere at once, X is probably having an outage.

What does "This post is unavailable" mean on X?

X lists four cases where a post can’t be viewed: it comes from a protected account you don’t follow, the account has blocked you, the post was deleted, or the account was deactivated. Posts from suspended accounts and posts that broke X’s rules can also be hidden behind a notice.

Why is a post "withheld" in my country?

X withholds a post or account in a country when it receives a valid legal demand, such as a court order, or a report under local law. X uses information about your location to decide which country you’re in. The post stays visible in other countries.

Why does a video on X say it was disabled by the copyright owner?

X responded to a copyright complaint under the DMCA and restricted access to the media. If it’s your video and you believe the removal is a mistake, X’s email explains how to file a counter-notice.

Can I see a post that says "This post is unavailable"?

Not if it was deleted or the account blocked you. For protected accounts, you need to request to follow them. If the post is hidden because you muted or blocked an account, X lets you click through the notice to view it.
